California Legion scrum-half Gonzalo Bertranou has once again been recognised as the premier back in Major League Rugby, claiming the 2026 MLR Back of the Year award to make it two consecutive titles.
The Argentine international has been at the heart of California Legion's rise since arriving in Major League Rugby, producing another outstanding campaign that helped lead the club to its first-ever MLR Championship Final while setting the standard for excellence in the competition.
For the second straight season, Bertranou's influence extended far beyond the statistics. His game management, speed around the breakdown, defensive work rate and ability to control the tempo of matches made him one of the most influential players in North American rugby. Whether directing play with his pinpoint service or creating opportunities through his vision and attacking instincts, Bertranou consistently delivered in the biggest moments throughout the 2026 campaign.
Already regarded as one of Argentina's most accomplished scrum-halves, Bertranou brought invaluable international experience to California Legion. His leadership and professionalism became a benchmark within the squad, helping drive the club to one of the most successful inaugural seasons in Major League Rugby history.
"Thanks a lot to all the players, team and complete Legion staff." Bertranou said.
"This is a team sport and I’m grateful for every opportunity to express myself on the pitch"
California Legion CEO Adam Freier praised Bertranou's achievement, saying the award reflected the impact he has had both on and off the field.
"To win this award once is a remarkable achievement, but to do it in consecutive seasons speaks volumes about Gonzalo's consistency, professionalism and class," said Freier.
"He raises the standard every single day. His ability to control a game, lead our attack and make everyone around him better is world class. More importantly, he's an outstanding person who has become an incredible leader within our organisation."
"Gonzalo embodies everything we want California Legion to represent—humility, excellence, competitiveness and putting the team first. We're incredibly proud to see him recognised again as the best back in Major League Rugby."
Bertranou's back-to-back honours further cement his place among the elite players in MLR history. After first earning the award in 2025 with RFC Los Angeles, he has now successfully defended the title while helping launch California Legion into a new era of success.
With consecutive Back of the Year awards, a championship final appearance and another season of elite performances, Bertranou has reaffirmed his reputation as one of the finest scrum-halves to play in Major League Rugby and a cornerstone of California Legion's future.
