Former BYU center Cole Semu signs with California Legion for 2026 after his rookie Major League Rugby season with the Utah Warriors.

California Legion has signed center Cole Semu for the 2026 season.

Semu arrives after being selected 28th overall in the 2024 MLR Collegiate Draft by the Utah Warriors. In his rookie campaign during the 2025 season, he appeared in 10 matches with eight starts, scoring a try and earning MLR Team of the Week honors in Round 16.

Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Semu moved to Washington State at the age of eight. He discovered rugby at age 12 while playing with Chuckanut Bay Rugby Club and quickly rose through the national pathway.

Semu represented the United States at the U18, U20, and U23 levels. He also competed internationally with the California Grizzlies U23 side, traveling to Chile during his development years.

At Brigham Young University, Semu developed into a powerful midfielder known for direct ball carrying and defensive output. Earlier in his athletic career he was a two star football recruit at Ferndale High School in Washington, where he played running back.

Now joining Legion, Semu adds youth, athleticism, and national team experience to the midfield as the club builds toward the 2026 season.
