California Legion has signed hooker Ben Sugars, adding a young front-rower with experience across England, Australia, Super Rugby, and Major League Rugby.
Born in Leeds, Sugars developed through the University of Nottingham while competing in the English Championship with Yorkshire Carnegie and Nottingham. Originally a back-row player, he transitioned to hooker during his university years, combining mobility with a strong defensive base.
In 2023, Sugars moved to Australia and joined Randwick, where he played a role in the club’s Shute Shield title run. His performances at club level earned him a call-up to the NSW Waratahs, where he made his Super Rugby debut during the 2024 Super Rugby Pacific season.
Sugars joined RFCLA ahead of the 2025 MLR season. He appeared in all 15 matches, starting 11, scoring two tries, and completing 135 tackles. His durability and work rate stood out in the front row, earning him two MLR Team of the Week selections during the season.
At 23 years old, Sugars brings upside and versatility to the Legion pack. Comfortable in open play and reliable defensively, he profiles as a modern hooker capable of maintaining tempo while contributing at the set piece.
His experience across multiple competitions and continued development make him a strong addition as California Legion continues shaping its roster for 2026.
