California Legion Signs Cassh Maluia
California Legion has signed Cassh Maluia ahead of the 2026 Major League Rugby season, adding a powerful, versatile presence to the midfield.
A California native from Compton, Maluia brings a rare athletic profile to the Legion. He starred at the University of Wyoming before being selected in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. He later spent time with the Tennessee Titans, building professional experience at the highest level of American football.
In 2023, Maluia transitioned to rugby with the American Raptors, where his physicality, defensive instincts, and work rate translated quickly. His ability to carry hard through contact and defend in space made him a natural fit for the professional game.
Maluia entered Major League Rugby in 2024 with the Chicago Hounds, earning valuable minutes and establishing himself as a reliable option in the backline. He continued his development in 2025 with San Diego Legion, appearing in nine matches and starting six times. Operating primarily at inside center, Maluia provided direct running, defensive presence, and gain-line success through the middle of the field.
Across his MLR career, Maluia has shown steady progression in both sides of the ball. His strength through contact sets the tone defensively, while his comfort carrying into traffic adds a physical edge in attack. His experience across multiple professional environments has shaped a composed and durable competitor.
Now returning to California, Maluia joins the Legion as the club continues to build toward the 2026 season. His signing adds depth, size, and flexibility to the midfield group, reinforcing the squad’s physical profile and competitive edge.
