California crossover athlete Justus Tavai returns to California after competing in Major League Rugby with RFCLA during the 2025 season. The tighthead prop now joins Legion, adding depth and impact to the front row for 2026.

A native of Inglewood, Tavai first built his career on the gridiron. He played defensive tackle at the University of Hawai‘i from 2018 to 2021, then at San Diego State in 2022 before pursuing professional opportunities following the 2023 NFL Draft. He later signed with the New England Patriots.

Tavai’s rugby journey began with the American Raptors, where he transitioned from football to rugby union and earned selection for the 2024 Super Rugby Americas season. Following the Raptors’ closure, he continued his development with Belmont Shore RFC before signing with Rugby FC LA in April 2025, highlight the success of the pathway in Los Angeles between Club to the professional stage.

Stepping into an injury-hit front row, Tavai quickly contributed in MLR action, appearing in four matches and earning his first professional start. His athletic background and physicality give Legion added strength at tighthead prop heading into the new campaign.

Professional sports are a common thread in the Tavai family, with brothers Jahlani and J.R. also competing at high levels of football. Legion fans know Justus will also be cheering this weekend as brother Jahlani suits up for the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX.

Tavai’s impact extends well beyond the Club level and Major League Rugby. He also plays a significant role in Los Angeles Rugby’s elite high school pipeline, serving on the coaching staff at Mira Costa High School—a program he and his brothers once represented as players. Today, their legacy is permanently etched in the rafters, recognized among the greatest athletes in the program’s history.

With professional experience, raw power, and room to grow in the game, Tavai’s return to California strengthens Legion’s pack as preparations for 2026 continue.
