California Legion continues building its 2026 roster with the signing of New Zealand fullback Rory van Vugt, adding proven MLR experience and attacking production to the backfield.

Van Vugt first appeared in MLR with Rugby ATL in 2020, quickly establishing himself as a reliable presence in the backfield. He followed with a strong 2021 campaign, starting every match as Atlanta pushed all the way to the MLR Championship Final.

After returning to New Zealand and gaining further experience with the Highlanders and Southland Stags in the NPC, van Vugt rejoined the organization when the franchise relocated to Los Angeles. He played a key role during the club’s inaugural season in its new market, again locking down a starting role at fullback.

Comfortable at both fullback and wing, van Vugt brings versatility, consistency, and big-match experience to the Legion back three. His ability to counterattack, manage territory, and contribute in open space makes him a key piece as the club continues shaping its 2026 roster.

With international touch rugby experience for New Zealand and professional success across both hemispheres, van Vugt returns to California ready to build on the progress made last season and help push the Legion further in 2026.
