California Legion has signed Ryan James ahead of the 2026 Major League Rugby season, adding a proven MLR wing with championship experience, California roots, and a track record of consistent production at the professional level.
Ryan James returns to California with the Legion as a familiar and reliable presence on the wing, bringing speed, composure, and experience shaped across multiple professional environments.
A California native, James developed through the San Diego Legion academy system before making his MLR debut with the Colorado Raptors in 2020. He joined the LA Giltinis ahead of the 2021 season and played a key role in the club’s historic inaugural campaign, contributing five tries and featuring in the Championship Series as LA captured the MLR Shield.
James followed that season with another solid year in 2022 before transitioning to the American Raptors ahead of the inaugural Super Rugby Americas season in 2023, expanding his experience in a new professional competition.
In 2024, James returned to Major League Rugby with the San Diego Legion, finally representing his local club at the MLR level. He started all 12 matches that season, recording over 800 meters gained in possession and providing steady impact across the back three. He followed with an even stronger 2025 campaign, starting all 15 matches, scoring five tries, and earning San Diego Legion’s Back of the Year honors.
“It was really special getting to represent my home city of San Diego the last two years,” James said. “Now being able to represent all of California is truly an honor. There’s great rugby across the state, and I’m glad we get to spend time in those communities this season.”
James also pointed to familiarity and belief in the group as key reasons behind his return.
“I’m fortunate to know this coaching staff and really looking forward to getting back to work with them,” he said. “They’ve recruited well this offseason, and there are some exciting players coming in. I know this group has what it takes to win championships, and I’m grateful to be part of MLR again in my home state.”
Across his MLR career, James has made 53 appearances, started 39 matches, and scored 12 tries. Known for his work rate, defensive reliability, and ability to stretch the field, he adds continuity and experience to the Legion backline as the club builds toward the 2026 season.
James’ return reinforces the Legion’s commitment to players with strong ties to California and familiarity with the demands of Major League Rugby.
