California Legion fell 35-17 to the undefeated Chicago Hounds in the Major League Rugby Championship Final, bringing an end to a remarkable 2026 campaign. Despite difficult conditions and periods playing with fewer men, Legion never stopped fighting and closed the season on the league's biggest stage.

The result marked the end of a memorable campaign that saw California overcome adversity throughout the season, unite supporters across the state, and establish themselves among Major League Rugby's elite.

Weather and Discipline Shape the Final

Played under cold, wet, and windy conditions, the championship quickly became a battle of territory and possession.

The undefeated Hounds entered the final at 11-0 and showed why they had been the benchmark all season. Chicago capitalized on early opportunities while California faced a difficult opening half that included two yellow cards, leaving Legion down to 13 players for a stretch.

Despite the setbacks, California continued to battle and held firm through extended defensive pressure.

Chicago carried a 17-3 lead into halftime.

A Second-Half Response

The momentum began to shift late in the first half as Legion created pressure inside the Chicago 22.

That carried into the second half.

California crossed for their first try and quickly added another, cutting into the deficit and briefly threatening a comeback.

But a stop-start half, combined with another yellow card and repeated interruptions, made it difficult to sustain momentum. Chicago regained control through strong territory management and eventually secured the title with a 35-17 victory.

A Season Worth Celebrating

Though the championship fell just out of reach, the determination shown by the players reflected the identity the group established throughout the year.

Legion also received tremendous support from the traveling Legion Co-Hort and supporters who stayed through the rain until the final whistle.

"First and foremost, congratulations to Chicago," said CEO Adam Freier. "They have been the standard all season and deservedly leave the championship undefeated."

"While we're disappointed with the result, I'm incredibly proud of our players, coaches, staff, and supporters. Playing significant portions of the match short-handed, in conditions that tested every aspect of the game, our group never stopped fighting."

Freier also praised the fans who made the trip to support the team.

"The support from the Legion Co-Hort and everyone who travelled to back us was extraordinary. To see our fans stay with us through the rain and until the final whistle says everything about the culture and community we've built around this club."

Thank You, California

From San Diego to Los Angeles, the Bay Area, Sacramento, and everywhere in between, supporters helped make 2026 a season to remember.

California Legion thank all supporters, partners, Club 24 members, and volunteers for their continued support throughout the season and look forward to building on this year's championship appearance.
