California Legion continued its late season surge after a dominant 42 to 10 victory over Old Glory DC on Sunday Night Rugby in Sacramento. Four Legion players were selected to the MLR Week 9 First XV, while the club also earned MLR Week 9 Team of the Week honors following one of its most complete performances of the season.

The recognition followed a statement night for the Legion in the first ever Major League Rugby match played in Sacramento. California crossed for six tries, gained 553 meters, and finished with 221 tackles made in a performance that pushed the club back into second place in the standings with two matches remaining in the regular season.

At hooker, Ben Sugars earned First XV honors after delivering one of the biggest defensive workloads of the weekend. Sugars finished with 27 tackles made, 32 meters gained, and 24 ruck arrivals while helping anchor the forward effort throughout the match. His physicality and nonstop work rate helped California control momentum early and maintain pressure across all 80 minutes.

Tighthead prop Tonga Kofe powered his way into the First XV after scoring one of the standout tries of the night. Kofe bulldozed through multiple Old Glory defenders on his way to the line and backed it up with 12 tackles made and 14 ruck arrivals. His impact around contact and set piece gave the Legion forward pack a major edge throughout the contest.

Captain Jason Damm once again led from the front in the second row with another complete performance. Damm crossed for a try of his own while adding 24 tackles made and 15 ruck arrivals in a relentless defensive display. His leadership and consistency continue to drive California during a crucial stretch of the season.

Out wide, Joe Mano continued his breakout campaign with another electric performance on the wing. Mano finished with a try, 85 meters gained, and 11 ruck arrivals while consistently threatening Old Glory in open space. His ability to create attacking momentum helped stretch the field and open opportunities throughout the match.

Club recognition as MLR Week 9 Team of the Week reflects a California side finding form at the right time. The Legion controlled territory, won physical battles, and delivered one of their strongest defensive performances of the year under the lights in Sacramento.

The focus now shifts east as California heads to Charlotte for a massive matchup with Anthem Rugby Carolina. With two matches remaining and playoff positioning tightening across the league, every result carries weight as the postseason approaches.
