Legion and Rugby Mexico align ahead of MLR 2026
Three weeks ahead of their opening match at Great Park in Irvine, Orange County, the California Legion completed a productive scrimmage against Rugby Mexico.

California Legion will have strategic focus on supporting and nurturing the emerging rugby nation through a range of initiatives.
The latest step in that collaboration came with a practice yesterday's scrimmage, where both teams were able to apply their skills and compete in a controlled environment. The session also provided an opportunity for coaching staffs to connect, exchange ideas, and reflect on Mexico’s preparation for its upcoming international campaign in 2026.
Speaking at the partnership, Legion Assistant Coach David Clancy emphasized the importance of continuing to build on the foundations already in place.
"This is a great partnership between the two teams,” Clancy said.
"We really enjoyed having Mexico at training today. They provided really good preparation for us with our opening round only three weeks away, and we were able to provide a valuable session for them as well.
"There’s a lot of positive movement with emerging nations and their rugby programs. You saw with the Six Nations results on the weekend that it does take time to build -Italy is a great example - but anything is possible.
"We really look forward to continuing to work with Mexico in the future and building on these strong ties.”
The session also allowed the Legion to familiarize themselves with their upcoming home venue.
“It was good to get some preparation in for our first round,” Clancy added.
"Orange County and this ground is familiar to some of the players. The Great Park is a great stadium with a strong rugby community. Being out here today, practicing and getting used to the conditions was really beneficial.
“We know there is strong support for rugby in this community, and we’re looking forward to seeing as many rugby fans as possible from across Southern California at our opening match.”
