California Legion fell 33 to 19 against the Seattle Seawolves on Sunday night at Starfire Sports Complex, missing out on a home playoff match but setting up an immediate semifinal rematch. Despite a fast start and moments of promise throughout the contest, Legion were unable to maintain early momentum against one of Major League Rugby's toughest home sides.

While the result closed the door on hosting a playoff match, California's postseason ambitions remain firmly intact. The No. 3 seed Legion will return to Starfire Stadium in seven days to face the No. 2 seed Seawolves once again, turning Sunday's regular-season finale into a preview of one of the most anticipated matches of the Major League Rugby season.

Legion entered the night knowing two competition points would secure a home playoff fixture. Against a Seattle side that had won 20 of its previous 23 matches at Starfire Stadium, the challenge was always going to be significant.

Fast Start for Legion

California came out firing from the opening whistle, controlling both possession and territory through the opening stages.

Their pressure paid off when Seattle were reduced to 14 men following a yellow card for repeated infringements. Shortly after, Gonzalo Bertranou crossed in the fifth minute to give Legion an early lead.

Despite the promising start, Seattle quickly found a response.

“We were really pleased with how we started the match,” said Head Coach Steve Hoiles. “Maybe the early try set us up with a bit of a false sense of success for the day, and it quickly turned after that.”

The Seawolves answered during their first visit inside the Legion 22 and gradually built momentum through their forward pack and defensive pressure.

A Tough Night at Starfire

Legion suffered another setback in the 22nd minute when Ed Timpson received a yellow card.

Even while down a player, California continued to compete and were rewarded when Timpson returned and later crossed for a crucial first-half try.

Billy Meakes made his return to action and worked tirelessly throughout the contest, while Joe Taufete'e delivered one of his strongest performances of the season with several dominant tackles and powerful carries.

Seattle carried a 21 to 12 advantage into halftime.

A Tale of Two Halves

The second half proved more difficult for California.

While Legion continued to create moments of attacking promise, they struggled to maintain the possession and territorial control that defined the opening quarter. Seattle's physical defensive effort repeatedly forced California to work for every opportunity.

By the 45th minute, Seattle had secured their fourth try and the accompanying bonus point.

“It was a tale of two halves for us,” Hoiles said. “We just fell away from what has usually brought us success and the style of rugby we want to play.”

Legion continued to fight until the final whistle and were rewarded late when Justice Tavai crossed in the 78th minute for California's final try of the evening.

The Real Battle Starts Now

The result means Legion's push for a home playoff fixture comes to an end.

However, the season is far from over.

As the No. 3 seed in the Major League Rugby playoffs, California will return to Seattle next weekend for an immediate rematch against the No. 2 seeded Seawolves.

If Sunday night's contest provided a preview, next week's meeting will determine who advances to the MLR Championship.

“We've got another opportunity against this team in seven days,” Hoiles said. “We'll lick our wounds, learn from it, and go again.”

With lessons to take from the performance and a championship berth at stake, California now turns its full attention toward writing a different ending.
