Legion Shine in MLR’s Week 2 Team of the Week

The California Legion delivered one of the most complete performances of Round 2, overpowering the New England Free Jacks 43–5 in San Diego. Built on forward dominance, sharp tactical control, and clinical finishing, the result earned multiple Legion players selection in Major League Rugby’s Team of the Week and recognition across the competition.

Leading the charge up front, hooker Joe Taufete'e set the physical tone early. His two tries came from sustained attacking pressure in close, where his power proved difficult to contain. Around the field, he added 17 ruck arrivals and seven tackles, reinforcing his impact on both sides of the ball.

In the second row, Legion Captain Jason Damm anchored the set piece and provided consistency throughout. His 15 lineout takes ensured clean possession, while 10 tackles and 21 ruck arrivals highlighted his work rate across phases. His presence helped the Legion maintain control from set piece to open play.

At openside flanker, Christian Poidevin delivered one of the standout efforts of the round. He recorded 19 tackles and an impressive 34 ruck arrivals, consistently disrupting the breakdown and slowing opposition ball. With 18 meters gained in attack, he added value beyond his defensive work.

Behind the pack, scrum-half and Legion Vice Captain Gonzalo Bertranou controlled tempo and territory. He gained 99 meters with ball in hand and added 152 kick meters to keep the Free Jacks pinned deep. His quick distribution maintained attacking rhythm, while eight ruck arrivals showed his involvement across the field.

At fly-half, Coby Miln directed the match with authority. He scored 18 points and dictated territory with 1,056 kick meters. He also added 98 meters carrying the ball, showing his ability to influence both structure and attack. His performance earned him MLR Player of the Week honors.

Out wide, Ryan James provided the finishing edge. He led the backline with 128 meters gained, consistently threatening the defense. His work off the ball stood out as well, contributing 12 ruck arrivals and three tackles to round out a complete performance.

Together, these efforts reflect a Legion side playing with cohesion, intensity, and clarity. The 43–5 result was not only dominant, it set a standard moving forward.

The Legion now turn their attention to a key road test against the Chicago Hounds on Sunday, April 12 at 6 PM PT during Sunday Night Rugby at SeatGeek Stadium.

They return home the following week for another Sunday Night Rugby clash, hosting the Seattle Seawolves on Sunday, April 19 at 5 PM PT at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.
