Ben Sugars

Ben Sugars joins California Legion ahead of the 2026 season, adding a young, dynamic presence to the front row at hooker.

Born in Leeds, Sugars developed his game through the University of Nottingham while competing in the English Championship with Yorkshire Carnegie and Nottingham. Originally a back-row player, he transitioned to hooker during his university years, bringing mobility, work rate, and a strong defensive foundation to the position.

In 2023, Sugars moved to Australia and joined Randwick, playing a role in the club’s Shute Shield championship campaign. His performances earned him an opportunity with the NSW Waratahs, where he made his Super Rugby debut during the 2024 Super Rugby Pacific season.

Sugars arrived in Major League Rugby in 2025 with Rugby FC Los Angeles and quickly established himself as a reliable front-row option. He appeared in all 15 matches, starting 11, scoring two tries, and completing 135 tackles while earning two MLR Team of the Week selections for his performances.

At just 23, Sugars brings durability, versatility, and international experience to the Legion pack. Comfortable in open play and dependable at the set piece, he profiles as a modern hooker capable of maintaining tempo while contributing across the field.

With experience spanning England, Australia, Super Rugby, and MLR, Sugars adds valuable depth and long-term potential as California Legion continues building its squad for the 2026 season.
