Billy Meakes, one of the faces of the MLR.

He joins California Legion ahead of the 2026 Major League Rugby season, bringing one of the league’s most accomplished midfield resumes to the squad.

The experienced center has been a consistent standout in MLR since 2021, earning multiple All-MLR selections and Back of the Year honors during stints with the LA Giltinis, Chicago Hounds, and Rugby FC LA. Known for his physical ball carrying, defensive reliability, and leadership in the midfield, Meakes has established himself as one of the competition’s premier centers.

The Australian first made his mark in Major League Rugby with the LA Giltinis, helping lead the club to the 2021 MLR Championship. His impact during that title run set the foundation for a productive career in the league.

Following the Giltinis era, Meakes joined the Chicago Hounds where he played a key role in the franchise’s early seasons. Serving as team captain, he helped guide Chicago to its first playoff appearance while delivering strong performances on both sides of the ball. During the 2024 season, he ranked eighth in the league for meters gained while completing 135 tackles.

In 2025, Meakes returned to Los Angeles with Rugby FC LA and produced another standout campaign. He earned five MLR Team of the Week selections, helped the club reach its first postseason appearance, and was named RFC LA Back of the Year. His performances also secured another All-MLR First XV selection — the fifth of his MLR career.

Across his time in Major League Rugby, Meakes has earned more than 70 caps, scored 13 tries, and recorded over 5,300 meters gained leading in the 2026 sesson. His experience, leadership, and consistent production add significant strength to the Legion midfield as the club prepares for the 2026 season.
