California Legion continue to set the pace across Major League Rugby. Five players earned selection in the Week 4 First XV following a 38–29 comeback win over the Seattle Seawolves in Los Angeles. The performance reflected control, work rate, and execution across all phases.
The recognition follows a statement second-half performance in Los Angeles, where Legion flipped a halftime deficit into a controlled 38–29 win. The group raised tempo, tightened discipline, and executed under pressure. That shift carried across the squad, with impact coming from the tight five through to the backfield, and it shows in the MLR Week 4 First XV selections.
At lock, Jason Damm delivered a complete shift in the engine room. He led the forward effort with 13 tackles and 14 carries, while adding 22 ruck arrivals. His presence around the park helped stabilize momentum and gave Legion a consistent platform to build from.

On the flank, Ed Timpson made his mark with high involvement across phases. He gained 51 meters with ball in hand and recorded 28 ruck arrivals. His work at the breakdown stood out, securing a key jackal that slowed Seattle’s attack and shifted field position.
At scrum-half, Gonzalo Bertranou controlled tempo and found space when it mattered. He scored a crucial try in the second half and added 58 meters running the ball. His 64 kick meters kept pressure on Seattle and supported Legion’s territorial game.
In the midfield, Billy Meakes brought balance on both sides of the ball. He led defensive efforts with 12 tackles and added 41 meters in attack. His three offloads kept plays alive and created opportunities through contact.
At fullback, Corbin Smith capped a standout performance with his first try for the Legion. He gained 111 meters and added 73 kick meters, providing a steady presence at the back while contributing to the attacking push that fueled the comeback.
Five selections from one match reflects a group playing with cohesion and intent. The second-half response against Seattle showed a side that adapts, executes, and closes out matches.
The focus now shifts north as the California tour continues. Two home matches remain. Saint Mary’s Stadium in the Bay Area on May 16. Heart Health Park in Sacramento on May 24.
