The California Legion fought through harsh conditions and a physical contest on the road, falling 48–24 to the Chicago Hounds on Sunday Night Rugby. In a match shaped by wind, rain, and early pressure from the hosts, the Legion stayed composed, responded with four tries, and closed strong.

From the opening stages, the contest tested California’s resolve. Chicago struck early and often, building a first-half lead with four tries, even while reduced to 13 men during a key stretch. The Legion held their shape. Two well-worked tries kept them within reach at the break and set the tone for a team that refused to back down.

“We played against a side that was more direct, more physical, and better than us on the night,” said Head Coach Steve Hoiles. “That’s the honest truth. You’ve got to admit when you get it wrong and move on quickly.”

The second half demanded more resilience. Ed Timpson powered over for the Legion’s third try before exiting late for an HIA assessment. The visitors continued to push, matching Chicago’s physicality while looking for moments to break through.

“We haven’t been consistent through three games. We’ve been a little up and down,” Hoiles added, pointing to an area of focus as the season builds.

That moment of breakthrough came late. Rory van Vugt chased down a rolling ball off a well-placed grubber, beating two defenders and keeping the play alive. The sequence ended with Joey Mano finishing in the corner. Coby Miln added the conversion to bring the Legion to 24.

California kept attacking beyond the 80-minute mark, building phases deep in Chicago territory in search of one more score. The final push came up short, but the fourth try secured a valuable bonus point, a reflection of the group’s persistence from start to finish.

The performance now turns into a quick reset. In a short competition, there is little time to dwell, and the focus shifts immediately to the next challenge.

“It’s not going to get any easier. Seattle will be hurting, and it’s a big game for both sides,” Hoiles said. “We don’t need to reinvent the wheel. We just need to get back to what we do well.”
